Why hire an editor?

Editors do much more than catch spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Whether you’re a first-time writer or a seasoned pro, a good editor can lift your words off the page and make them sing. If you’re preparing a manuscript for publication or developing marketing materials, writing your memoirs or compiling an exhibition catalogue, polishing your thesis or dissertation, or maybe just updating your résumé, I can help. My job as an editor is to work collaboratively with you to help you say exactly what you want to say and say it in a way that will reach your intended audience and fully engage your reader.

My writing and editing skills were honed through my work at CBC Radio and the Ontario Media Development Corporation, my graduate studies at the Ontario Institute of Education/University of Toronto, and my participation in numerous courses offered by Editors Canada. In addition to writing and editing, I've worked in social services and the film and television industry and as a publicist and director of business development. I offer a range of editorial services, including manuscript evaluation, copyediting, stylistic and substantive editing, proofreading, research, book reviews, writing, and rewriting. (For a detailed explanation of the various kinds of editing as defined by Editors Canada, please see Definitions of Editorial Skills.) I have also developed a small-group workshop that can help you and your colleagues identify and avoid some of the common errors and pitfalls that plague even highly experienced writers. When it comes to writing, it’s not just about getting it right; it’s about making it better.
